It's been way too long...Secret Santa Prize from Card Corner Club Radio

   My last blog was on December 17, 2010 which is too long in between blog especially when I have busted a few blaster of Bowman DP&P, 8 Bowman DP&P retail rack packs ( 2 autos in 8 packs, not sure if that is normal)**, and a couple blaster Bowman Platinum. I will get around to posting my the autos I pulled and other cards of note. The GED class I teach starts back today after a little ice/snow, Christmas Break, another 10' of snow, and yesterday of Dr. King's Birthday. I have been out of work for one month to the day. You'd think I would have gotten something accomplished with all that free time on my hands. It did not happen; although I have gotten a surprising amount done today.
   My blog today is about a great internet radio show. Card Corner-Club is a website that provides forums, product reviews (sport and non-sport), video box breaks on YouTube, and Card Corner-Club Radio. They can also be followed on Twitter and "Like" on Facebook. The radio is great way to find out information about up coming products that are going to hit the market, discussions on the market, special guest from the card companies (Chris from Upper Deck was last weeks guest and they have had spokes person from Leaf and Panini). They give away cards to very caller. The Card Corner-Club Radio show airs Friday nights at 11pm Eastern/ 10pm Central. The show runs for one hour and the hour flies by. They did mention maybe the chance of add time to the show which would be great. Another guest they have just about every week is Dimitri Young, who is an avid collector himself. Hearing a former major leaguer talk about his approached to collecting very interesting. Young's approach and views on collecting graded cards really changed my opinion on about buy graded cards and having my cards graded. He started small and it grew. I made my first purchase of a 2001 Topps Traded Albert Pujols PSA graded 8. I got a good buy I on it at $40, it was my birthday, and it was my first graded purchase. Young said he started small and that is about all he collects now is graded. The tip he gave on the show was not put purchase new cards graded lower than an eight. My next few purchases graded were 2001 Upper Deck Pros and Prospects Brett Farve BGS 9 ($3), 2000 Multi-AD Midwest League Top Prospects Josh Beckett BGS 9.5 ($10), 1989 Topps Traded Troy Aikman BGS ($7), 1998 Stadium Club Prime Rookies Randy Moss PSA 9 ($10), and 1998 Stadium Club Prime Rookies PSA 9 ($12). I have provided a link to their main website, social networking pages, and to their Internet radio show.

   I had the chance to call in on their December 17th show. The host were running a Secret Santa type game to add a little little bit to the show. I was the first caller, so I got to take part in the game. They offered me a list of cards to take or take what was behind door number two. The three cards cards that offer up from were three Gridiron Gear: Gridiron Gems Giant autograph swatch of Marcus Easly, Gridiron Gear Dual Prime Patch and Football Armanit Edwards, and a Crash Course of LaSean McCoy/Brian Orakpo. I had done a box break of Unrivaled and Platium earlier in the week and I had pulled a Armanti Edwards patch autographs from both boxes. My 2010 Bowman Draft Picks and Prospects

I really thought about getting on here and giving a review of the '10 Bowman DP&P; however, I think there are plenty other blogs out there that you can found out about the mis-cuts and rough edges. It seems to me that the Chrome Curl that plagued the other chrome product has been fixed. This set is just what it is a prospecting set. I like the variety of USA Team cards, Bowman First Cards, and rookie cards. I got a total of 19 different USA Team cards and 28 1st round picks. Not pictured below are the two Posey, two Heyward, and one Strasburg which I pulled from the packs. Also not pictured below is Bryce Harper. What I have added below are a few of the USA Team cards, some of the 1st round picks, refractors and my ONE hit per box. It is a prospect set and this time of year makes it hard to get up for a set of unknowns unless you do a little research. All and All I am pleased with the names I pulled. What I am a little short on is my ONE hit. I hope everyone else has more fun than I did with their Hobby, Retail, and Blasters. How long is it until pitchers and catchers report?

**Why don't I post today games with spreads and over and under. Today Indy at Detroit, New Orleans at Dallas, and Cinny at New York Jets. Everyone will pick against the spread, the OVER/UNDER, and the tie break would be total points scored by all 8 teams without going over like Price's Right. You can get in after the first game starts, but once the game starts you can't pick it. You get in late you will just be down a game, but that's nothing you can't over come. And what I will be giving away will be at the bottom.

That's all you have to do. pick the winner against the spread, the over/under, and the tie-breaker in case is the total points. The poster with the most correct wins. If two posters just so happen to have the same answers even on the tie breaker, the price will be split. The first poster will get 3 cards and the 2 poster will get two. It being Thanksgiving the sun could shine on multiple dog rear ends today and if that happens, I will figure something out.

Getting Some Strange!

     I had the chance to visit a different Wal-Mart (store #1458) this weekend and purchase retail which my local Wal-Mart (store #2988) has yet to provide. I was asked to work in the pit side concession stand at Brainerd Optimus Drag Strip on Saturday November 20th. It was the annual Draggin' for Toys. Draggin' For Toys is a charity race. The monetary proceeds will be given to T.C. Thompson’s Children's Hospital and the toys will be given to Providence Ministries to be given to children on Christmas day who may otherwise not have a Christmas.
    Working in the concession stand provided me a chance to make a few extra bucks. I have been itching to buy something for the past two weeks. I decided to treat myself to some cards. I didn't want to blow everything I made at the track, so I just stopped at Wal-Mart (store #1458) by the strip after work. The aisle number is 23 and is double the size of the aisle at my hometown Wal-Mart. The aisle was well stocked and had product I had not seen at a retailer as of yet. I first noticed Bowman Chrome baster boxes and Topps Update racks and blasters. After some browsing the shelf and making it to the bottom, I found a retail box of '10 Bowman Chrome and '10 Topps Update Series. The price on both were $71.99 which are a tad bit over-priced considering the price of hobby boxes. Bowman Chrome Hobby is $42 and Topps Update is $35 this week at Blowoutcards.com.
      I decided I would purchase a rack pack of Topps Update and a blaster of Bowman Chrome. I scanned the highlights in the Update pack and scan the whole blaster box. I made three scans for the Update series. I scanned the notable rookies, All-Star Cards, and inserts.

It is hard to judge a set from one rack pack, so I looked over the checklist I could find. The set has some interesting cards in it. There are several seek-able rookies. There are two Stephan Strasburgs. One is the one from the Factory sets numbered 661 and the other is a Rookie Debut card which is another part of the set that has all the great rookies from this past season like Posey, Heyward, Leake, and many more. One question about the Strasburg 661 card which was brought up on a different blog is that "are the #661 cards in the Update Series different from the Factory Set?" I have yet to find out. I am sure it is something that will be answered before long.

2010 Bowman Chrome Blaster

I bought the blaster not knowing really anything about them. I got home and started ripping through packs. The first thing I noticed as three cards. I didn't read the box before buying it, but the three cards would not have stopped me from buying it; however, three cards seems to be on the short end of the stick. I went to look at the hobby boxes and they only come with fours per pack. They could put a couple more cards in both to help improve the value of the boxes. Another thing I noticed was the texture and the lack of gloss on some of the cards. I have a friend that's into photography. I asked her to feel and look at the two different cards. She said that the ones without gloss looked to be printed on a basic mat material and the glossy on the glossy mat material which causes the different textures. She said it was probably a company error. I was like you don't say. Anyway, below are scans of the entire blaster box.

Arracting Collectors and my meaning of "Hits"!

     I've been throwing a couple ideas/theories around in my head know for too long now. I just watched the San Francisco Giants win the World Series. I figured there would be no time like the present to write the blog I've been m mulling over and teasing those of you who have listening to my ramblings. I have been thinking about part of this blog since the Allen and Ginter retail baster boxes hit the shelves at retail stores. The two main ideas of the blog are how retail is bring back the collectors and different meaning of the "Hit". The blog may end in mid-thought or not. It just depends on my progress and thoughts. I am thinking this particular blog will be open ended so readers can add thoughts and so I can just pick where needed.      Collectors are coming back to the hobby. I am one of them. They were flocking back with vengeance in June when Strasburg-Mania hit. I went to several Wal-Mart stores when 2010 Bowman "supposedly" hit the retail store shelves. I went to my local Wally-World the day I had heard that 2010 Bowman hit the retail stores. I got to the card isle, #13, at my local WM. They had one feeder box. There was one other collector standing their thinking about how many packs to purchase. I think there were about 15 to 20 packs left in the feeder book. They had no blaster boxes or rack packs. He took his 4 packs to check out. I am still standing there trying to find the price per pack, so I would know how many pack I could by. The other collected past and I stopped him.. I asked him what he was charged per pack. The packs were $3.98. As he walked off, he said, “I hope I pull a Heyward.”   I told him good luck and now with the price I could determine who many packs I could buy. I had almost $15 on me, so I purchased four packs. I got home and ripped through the packs like I missed Christmas three years straight. Well, I did not get a Strasburg base or chrome. I wasn’t disappointed, because it was my first four packs and I pulled Dustin Ackley and the Jason Heyward the other collect was looking for and I hope he did get one. He probably got the Harper and Strasburg. I went back to isle #13 about 4 or 5 hours later. The packs were gone and even the feeder box was gone. It was really strange. It’s like they never had 2010 Bowman on the shelf. I went on a mini-mission to other Wal-Mart stores in the surrounding counties in Northwest Georgia and the Chattanooga area. None of the stores had even the hint of 2010 Bowman baseball at all. Well that’s enough with the rant about 2010 Bowman Retail. Most of the ’10 Bowman never hit retail stores. It went straight to eBay at two to three times the retail price.
     The next release from Topps would be the 2010 Allen and Ginter. I thought A&G would go the route of the 2010 Bowman. After all, Topps included another Strasburg autograph and a hard to pull mini. A&G did go the route of the ’10 Bowman retail for the first two weeks of the products release. Which “by chance” was long enough for the code to be cracked. When local retailors did get A&G feeder packs, rack packs, and blaster boxes, they had plenty and still do. I bought two blaster boxes when they did hit the retail stores because I didn’t know if I would see anymore. I noticed something with the first two boxes. There was a jersey card in the first box and a Victor Martinez mini Bazooka back numbered to 25 in the second. I chalked it up to just the luck of two boxes. Next week, I purchased my third blaster box. I pulled another jersey card from that box. It got me to thinking maybe that Topps was trying to spread the wealth of the chase cards. From accounts of other retail buyers, they were having the same kind of luck. As Topps released product throughout the summer and into the fall including football, I noticed that I was getting a chase card per retail box. I believe Topps is making the chase card more available in retail to make their product more attractive to casual and/or collectors on a budget. Most of the chase cards I have seen in retail are of the non-auto variety, but autographs have popped from retail packs.
     I would consider myself a collector on a budget and collector that is getting back into the hobby. I read several blogs and message boards. The word “Hit” is used mostly when autographs are pulled. I believe “Hits” come in many forms. An idea I think others share as well. I actually think “hits” come anytime a chase card is pulled. I think a numbered autograph would be a “Big Hit”, an autograph would be a “Hit”, and jersey, relic, #’d parallels, short prints as “Mini-Hits”. The retail blaster boxes I have purchased have contained one “Mini-Hit”. In past years, I don’t think I have seen with the regularity as I have this year the number of “Mini-Hits” in retail blaster boxes. I think Topps is doing this to attract collectors to retail, bring back collectors to the hobby, and help spread the chase cards across Hobby and Retail buyers.

I broke down last night. I bought a blaster box of 2010 Topps Chrome and Football. I was really in my budget to do it, but sometimes my budget burns through my wallet. I must say I like the Chrome football. They do seem to have less of a problem with the "Chrome Curl".

After reading a few blogs about 2010 Topps Chrome baseball and finding out 2010 Topps Chrome Football retail were at Wal-Mart stores, I could not fight the urge any longer. I went to Wal-Mart after work tonight to see if they had any of the Chrome products. Yes, they did have both baseball and football Chrome. I am not a fan of the baseball chrome. I bought a value pack of the baseball however just to see the cards and maybe have a little luck. My local Wal-Mart has blaster boxes and value packs of both Topps Chrome football and baseball. I noticed they had one blaster box of Topps Platinum on the shelf. They were out of the Platinum for the past two weeks, so I grabbed a blaster box of the Platinum product. Here is a list of what I purchased:

I could see the first one of the red refractors in Chrome football hang the rack. I picked it up and saw it was Tim Tebow, so I had to buy that one. I did noticed that the baseball was better at packing, because no of the refractors could be seen through the front. I did look at the football. I however did not search through the packs on the rack. I just notice the football value packs could be made to see the first card in the refractor packs. Here is what I pulled from each item:

I didn't have any real jaw-dropping hits, but I did get what I call a mini-hit. Mini-hits come mostly from blaster box. I have noticed since Topps' release of the Allen and Ginter blaster boxes from this year that most boxes in which I have busted have what I call the mini-hits. I pulled a Jonathan Crompton Auto from the first Platinum blaster I opened and from the three A&G blaster I opened I pulled 2 jersey cards and one of the mini Bazooka numbered to /25. The Platinum box I purchased today had two thick stock cards and the numbered refractor. It seems to me Topps is making an attempt to add a little value to the retail seen which in my opinion is a very good thing for collectors like me who work our hobby into our already tight monthy budget.

As far as the Chrome Curl, the baseball is far worse than the football from what I have noticed so far. With that being said, I do prefer the football over the baseball. I am not certain if I will purchase any more of either, but football would be the product I would buy.

Please excuse poor lay of the color coordination. I hope it some find interesting and maybe we can discuss trade or purchase. Look for another blog as I am sorting through baseball, football, and will even have few NFL cards from the early 90's (Jagr), early to mid 80s, and a 2nd year Ray Bourque.

The 2010 Sweet Spot Football is a very nice set. With Upper Deck losing their NFL license, they really use their creative to come up with a nice looking set. I do not think it has taken the collecting world by storm. I do however think this will be one the sets that will grow in popularity as the NFL season plays out. I bought one box. I pulled a Billy Simms auto helment #'d to 300 and Javarris James NCAA Sweet Spot Signatures Rookies #'d 300. Both of those cards sold for mediocre prices on eBay. I got four Sweet Swatches which is the basically the normal for the boxes. I did list the Sweet Swatches on eBay, but not one sold. Here are the Sweet Swatches I still have and are for sale:

I would like to thank anyone that took time to read my blog and/or took the time to check out some of the items I listed on eBay. This is my second day incorporating a blog to promote my listed items at eBay. I hope to post some box breaks and some of those maildays I see a few collectors doing. I have had days I know the postal lady had to be cussing me a blue streak. You know those days when you go a little over board on eBay, at Blowout Cards, and/or over at HobbyKings.com. It was last June. I was SOUI and spent almost $500 in a matter of 2 or 3 hours. If I had been up on the blogs and all the video of the box breaks some of y'all do, I could have done several. Oh, I bet some of you are wondering what SOUI means. It means Shopping Online Under the Influence. If I hadn't been under the influence, I know I would not have paid what I paid for a couple of those 2010 Bowman Blaster boxes. I still to this day have not pulled a Bowman Strasburg or Harper. I do have plenty Ackley however. I did make a few good buys at the time probably out of sheer luck. I got 2009 retail box of T-206 and 2010 Chicle. I pulled autos from both. I got a 2009 Donruss Elite Baseball blaster box and pulled three autos from that. As a matter fact, the Tony Sanchez I listed on eBay came from that box break. During my ordering pay no mind to my budget, I ordered the Tri-Star Pursuit of the Majors box and several Mike Stanton, Mike Minor, and a few other prospects that I'm prospecting card lots. I pulled a 1/5 Jason Heyward from the Tri-Star box. I posted it on a couple message boards and it just got ripped apart because of the signature which was most on the sticker. I didn't really noticed till some else laid eyes on it. I contacted Tri-Star and they sent me a random auto card because kind hard to replace a 1/5 auto. They also sent a letter of apology for the substandard card and I got to keep the Heyward auto which pulled $41.01 on eBay. The guy who purchase my card also pulled a #'d /5 himself. He was in the process of owning all of the #'d /5. He had all both one within a week of his winning bid with me. Well to wrap this this ramble up. If you get nothing out all out of today's blog, remember SOUI is NOT a good idea.

You may have been just like me. Did not know that sports cards could be bought from sportsauthority.com. I went to the site to check out if they had any new cards that they are taking preorders on. I knew they are offering 2010 Topps T-206 retail blaster boxes ($20) and the retail boxes ($71.99). In July, they had pre-orders for the retail boxes at a price $55.99. I had a retail box ready to come my way only to have money deficiency problems coming into this month. So, I had to cancel my order. It's a big disappointment. I could have really left the order to go through and take the bank penalty. It would have been about same price because once they saw the product was in high demand and marked the retail boxes $15 to $20. Now to get into what has inspired me to write this blog. At sportsauthority.com, they are offer Topps 2010 T206 Value Pack (18 packs) for $107.99. After reading the what comes with the Value Pack, I don't really think this is a good buy. Here are the particulars about the Topps 2010 T206 Value Pack and it is word for word what t:he retail box is said to have in it. You only get 24 more cards with the Value Pack over the retail box yet the price difference is $36 for 24 cards. 24 cards are not worth the outrageous amount of $36, only if you pulled extra autograph or relic cards.

I FINALLY pulled a Strasburg and Week 1 of local parlays!

First, I want to mention why I changed the name of my blog. It was mainly to the fact that I wanted to change it. Fair Enough!

This week marks the first week of NFL football which means a return to weekly local parlays. You are probably thinking "shouldn't he have drop the "y" in parlay and add an "i" for the plural or not. I'm here to tell you it is right. Now that we moved past that. I was saying this week is the return of local level parlays. I can only have as much luck collecting week points as I did last year. I hit 2 five team parlays last year, so I basically played on "house" money in 2009. I can only hope this week goes as well. I may blog twice a week if I can find the motivation to stay with the blog just as I stay with the parlays. My intent, which sometimes comes through but has been known to fall short, is to blog mid-mid week with thoughts and picks with the weeks weekly spread. With my intent being known, let's start with Week 2 NCAA and Week 1 of NFL. Here are my five picks the two 5 team parlays I have played this week:

I finally pulled a Steven Starsburg today from a factory packed item today for the first time. Since Topps put started putting items out this year, I been trying to pull a Steven Strasburg. I lost count of the number of packs of 2010 Bowman I opened in hopes of pulling a Strasburg rookie. I pulled plenty of Dustin Ackley on the other hand. I can only wish Dustin Ackley the best since I am somewhat vested. Until this day, I only got the Strasburg cards from trades and/or from factory sets where they were guarantee d. Same thing goes for the 2010 Topps Allen and Ginter Series. I opened plenty of packs but no Strasburg. Today was the day, however. A good 2 months after he goes down with an 18 to 24 month sidelining injury did I pull my first Strasburg RC card. It is the Wal-Mart special collectors Strasburg. There is only three players in the set, so that made for an above average shot at pulling one. They are placed in side a collector's special at Wal-Mart that includes 6 packs of 2010 Topps Series 2, 1 pack of 2010 Topps Allen and Ginter, 1 Million Card Give Away redemption card, and 1 of the three cards in the special Wal-Mart set. Previous to today, I had bought four other collector packs trying to pull one. The first two packs I bought. I pulled card #2 from the set, Cal Ripken. The third time I pulled card #1, Babe Ruth and the fourth time was the charm today. I pulled card #3 Steven Strasburg. Now, I can only hope when he does return from Tommy John Surgery that when it's all said in done that he can be mentioned in the same breath with the other two Hall of Famers that accompany him in the set.
